Valer Deck and Patio, a family-owned deck and patio construction company operating as Valer Builders LLC, received second-place recognition in the Alternative Decks Under $35,000 category of the North American Deck and Railing Association’s 2024 National+ Deck Competition. The results were announced at the association’s 15th Annual Awards Celebration on January 3, 2025, in Clearwater Beach, Florida.
The North American Deck and Railing Association represents deck builders, manufacturers, suppliers, and inspectors across the continent. Its annual competition draws entries from professionals throughout North America and is judged by industry peers who evaluate design, construction quality, material selection, and overall project execution. Entries are grouped into categories by project type and value, which places submissions against comparable work rather than against projects of a different scale.
The alternative deck categories cover composite, PVC, and other non-wood decking systems. First place in the Under $35,000 category went to San Diego Decks and Patios. Winning entries in each category are published with project galleries in the association’s online awards archive.
Valer Deck and Patio was founded in May 2022 by Dan Stendeback, who serves as president. The company holds a Virginia Class A contractor license, number 2705187003, issued by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation and valid through August 31, 2027. It is a member of the North American Deck and Railing Association and an accredited business with the Better Business Bureau.
Stendeback brings more than 25 years of carpentry and construction experience to the company. He entered the trade through his father’s construction work, and an early deck project shaped the focus on outdoor living construction that the business was built around.

The company builds primarily with composite and PVC decking and is certified under the TimberTech by AZEK contractor program at the Platinum Pro tier. Capped composite and PVC systems are manufactured to resist moisture absorption, fading, and staining, a factor in a region that moves between humid summers and winter freeze-thaw cycles. Railing systems come from TimberTech, Deckorators, and Barrette Outdoor Living in composite, glass, vinyl, aluminum, steel, and cable configurations.
Framing options include steel systems from Fortress Building Products, aluminum framing from TimberTech, and composite framing from Owens Corning, selected according to the structure and site. Elevated decks can be fitted with underdeck drainage such as TimberTech DrySpace, which channels water away from the space below the deck surface. Integrated lighting is installed using In-Lite and Tru-Scapes systems.
Structural requirements shape how each project is planned. Fairfax County requires deck footings to bear on solid ground a minimum of 24 inches below grade, with deeper footings when inspectors find soft fill or poorly bearing soil, and bearing conditions must be verified by county inspectors before concrete is placed. Utility locates through the state notification service are required before any excavation begins.
Residential deck permits in the county are issued through its land development office, and the county publishes prescriptive span and footing tables that standard decks are built to meet. Projects falling outside those prescriptive standards require engineered plans. Permitted work then proceeds through a footing inspection, a framing inspection, and a final inspection.
Valer Deck and Patio manages design and construction in-house rather than assigning core work to outside subcontractors. Projects begin with a design consultation and 3D modeling, then move through permit acquisition, foundation and framing work, and construction to a final walkthrough, with Stendeback involved at each stage. Homeowners receive progress photographs as the build advances.
In addition to composite and PVC decks, the company builds patios in concrete, stamped concrete, brick, pavers, natural stone, and flagstone, along with pergolas, covered and screened porches, three-season rooms, sunrooms, and gazebos.
