From shoe soles and tires to firefighting foam and artificial turf, soy is showing up in more everyday products than most realize
ST. LOUIS, MO, UNITED STATES, October 23, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Most people hear “soy” and think of food, but soy has more than 1,000 uses beyond food for people and animals. From the soles of shoes and tires on the road to artificial grass and firefighting foam, soy is already at work in products and places people encounter every day.
“Soy is a renewable resource that is replacing many materials traditionally made from crude oil,” explains Brent Renner, Iowa Soybean Farmer and United Soybean Board Director. “Skechers is using soy in the manufacture of shoe soles, in over 170 styles. SYNLawn has installed millions of square feet of soy-backed artificial grass at athletic fields, golf courses and dog parks. Goodyear uses soy in its tires.”
And those are just a few examples of how soy is showing up in unexpected places.
One of the most surprising uses is in firefighting technology. SoyFoam is a soy-based firefighting foam that’s 100% free of toxic PFAS, or “forever chemicals.”
“When these ‘forever chemicals’ are replaced with soy-based formulas, we protect the health of our firefighters and limit the contamination of soil and water resources,” Renner says. SoyFoam has already been adopted by fire departments across the country.
Soy is also being used to develop biodegradable products. United Soybean Board developed a biobased plastic straw using high oleic soybean oil that is soil and marine biodegradable.
From tires and shoes to artificial turf and firefighting technology, these unexpected applications offer a glimpse at how soy is being used in innovative ways across industries.
